Steve Ballmer, Microsoft Corporation Chief Executive Officer since 2000, was the first man ever to become a billionare solely because of his stock option holdings. Forbes magazine ranked Mr. Ballmer the 23 rd richest man in the “World’s Richest People” poll. His net worth totals more than 14 billion dollars.
Ballmer, a native of Detroit Michigan, was Valedictorian of his 1973 high school class and scored a perfect 800 on the math portion of his SAT. This brilliant scholastic achievement sent Ballmer to Harvard on a scholarship where he met his dormmate and dear friend Bill Gates. Their friendship grew stronger through Harvard and even after Gates left Harvard to develop a software company.
After graduating magna cum laude and receiving his Bachelor of Arts degrees in mathematics and economics, Ballmer went on to work for Procter & Gamble. After two years of working he enrolled in Stanford’s Graduate School of Business for a Masters of Business Administration and following in Gate’s footsteps, dropped out to join Gates and work for Microsoft. On June 11, 1980, he became the 24 th employee of Microsoft, accepting a $50,000 salary in addition to a percentage of owenership of the company.
As he continues to work for Microsoft, Ballmer has control of the finances. As of now Ballmer serves as the longest employee member of the company and recently sold 8.3 percent of his shareholding.
Ballmer, a man of passionate expression and tremendous enthusiasm, has been a leading member of the frontier stage as well as the success phase and will continue to serve this ubiquitous corporation. He remains married to his wife Connie and has three sons.
